  1. Depends on State/Country.

    But I wouldn't do it.

Petrol/gas vapors are more flamable than petrol itself (in fact, you could, if you're lucky you could put off the burning safety match in petrol) so a static charge may trigger an explosion.

  2. In September, the four largest service station operators in Canada -- Sunoco, Shell, Petro-Canada and Esso -- moved to stop customers from using mobile telephones while at the gas pumps. The decision followed a warning from Ontario's Technical Standards and Safety Authority.

The city of Cicero, Ill., a Chicago suburb, recently passed the first law in the nation banning the use of cellular phones at gas stations.

  3. Not against the law, but supposedly a danger of static electricity blowin' up your vehicle, hence the signs at all gas stations near the pumps telling you not to.

  4. yes - danger (although very slight) of explosion

  5. Not that I know of Peanut.

  6. No but you could cause a fire in the petrol station...its says it clearly on most pumps (uk) to turn them off.

  7. It is not against the law, but why would you want to risk it? Gasoline fumes are so  flammable.

  8. In some areas, there may be statutes against this. Cicero Illinois was the first city to create such a ban.

It has something to do with the electrical charge, or static electricity and the gas fumes being a dangerous thing, however, Snopes can give you the scoop:
