Question:

Is it alright to change contact solutions without going to the eye doctor?

I've been using COMPLETE Multi-Purpose Contact Lens Solution since I got my contacts about 3 months ago. The eye doctor only gave me two little bottles of it, and i'm starting to run out. Any store that i've looked at, I can't find the solution at. And I really don't want to have to keep going back to the eye doctor to get solution. So I was wondering if it was okay to change my contact solution, without going to my eye doctor?

  1. Sure you can change solutions, but there is a short process you should go through first.

Unless it is a new pair of lenses you are starting with on the new solution , they should be purged of the old solution first.

Soak them in the new solution for 2 hours, then throw it out, then again for 4 hours , then throw that solution out too, then you are good to go with the new stuff.

There are often chemical reactions between 2 different brands that can be very irritating to the eyes, and cause them to dry out. But by doing that routine first , it removes all traces of the old stuff.

As for your other question...if the Dr. told you not to sleep in them, why would you do it ?

They probably aren't meant for sleeping in and you could be very sorry if you try it.

It is NEVER a good idea to sleep with them on...Take 2 minutes and remove them...stay safe !

  2. It is OK to change solutions. If you have sensitive eyes, some might feel less irritating to your eyes. I really like the Aquify solution you can get at walmart or at 1800 Contacts (they have the best price on it)

Don't sleep in your contacts. I accidentally slept with mine a couple of times but then they really started drying out my eyes. I STRONGLY recommend taking them out.

  3. oh yeah. its totally ok to change.

I've been wearing contacts for about 8 years now, and I usually just buy the off brand no-rub solution that is cheap. every once in a while I might buy a different one.

it won't hurt your eyes I promise.

  4. I've used the boston brand for many years. As to sleeping with them I never bought into that. I started wearing contacts many years ago, just get into the habit of taking them out every night. Sure some doctors will tell you the new lens is safe to wear overnight but I don't believe it. Don't take a chance on messing up your eye sight.
