Question:

Is it alright to have black diamonds on the sides of your engagement ring?

My fiance and I are discussing what kind of engagement ring to buy me, and he said he would let me pick it out because he wants me to have a ring I like. However, I have always been a fan of black diamonds, and I would like to have an emerald cut diamond in the center on a platinum band with a little black diamond on each side. But I want them to be "rough" black diamonds, like Carrie Bradshaw's s*x and the City necklace in this picture.

However, my fiance does not want me to have black diamonds on my engagement ring, because he believes black is a bad color and it's not appropriate for an engagement. He thinks it will be too superstitious and bring about bad things. So he has told me any other stone but black diamonds on the sides, but I truly want them!

My question is, is it alright to have black diamonds on an engagement ring? I don't want to disappoint him, but at the same time, I don't want to give up my dream engagement ring. Am I wrong for wanting them?

  1. I dont like your idea at all.  You are going to be wearing that ring forever and forever is a long time!  I would agree with the comment about asking him to give you a ring with black diamonds as a wedding present

  2. I like black diamonds.  My mother had a black diamond wedding band and a black diamond anniversary band.  I dont think anything is wrong with that at all.

  3. I know that you think rough black diamonds are really neat and chic, but this ring will just look weird.

Black diamonds, not just the rough ones, really don't have the sparkle of white diamonds.  An engagement ring should look clean, bright and vibrant.  Black diamonds, especially rough, will really bring it down.

When he asked you to pick out what you wanted, he probably meant in the sense of a traditional setting.  He might not have offered if he knew you wanted colored side stones.  It also may be that the price of doing this (if it can be done) will be way too high for him.

Ask for a black diamond right hand ring as a wedding present instead.

  4. I think colored diamonds...especially black are unique. I think that you should have what you want since you will have it your whole life..but I think the idea is neat!

  5. Yup, it's fine!

  6. You are not wrong. He is. He asked you what you wanted instead of going to get it himself without telling you. Now he wants to back down. Have a long talk with him about it.

  7. Tell him either black or red. He'll look up the price of reds and get you blacks.

  8. Your wedding set is for life, so my suggestion is not go for the latest fad.  In a few years it will look very awkward on your finger.  Your engagement ring should stand out with brilliance.  If you like colored diamonds, such as black, then have them set into a different kind of ring, but do avoid the black in your wedding set.  Later on you might want to get an eternity band with different colored diamonds in it, but no black in your engagement ring.  Black diamons are the lowest quality diamond, usually used for industrial work, and are very small.  Besides, you should also take your fiance's thoughts about it into consideration.  I would not go with any black diamond.  They're cheap.  And industrial.

  9. If he's against black you could always go for dark blue "rough" sapphires, that way you could get the look you desire and please him by avoiding his superstitions.

  10. I sure would go with him on this - simply because he expressed such a strong opinion. Just think, if it were him only choosing the ring, he wouldn't buy one with black.

I say go with something else - there are other coloured stones to get as shoulder stones if you want, and at some point in the future, buy yourself a dress ring with black diamonds.
