Question:

Is it alright to ride to clutch in reverse?

I'm learning to drive a manual and I want to know if it's ok to have the clutch pressed down halfway when going in reverse. I find that when the gear is fully engaged the car speeds up too much. I'm afraid the car could stall or I could have complications if I control the speed with the brake.

  1. Riding the clutch in gear will wear out the clutch plate perhaps causing other problems too..

  2. never good to ride the clutch

you will learn the touch - trust me

all the best - good luck!

  3. It just comes with time. It is bad for the clutch. I drop mine for less than one second which gets it moving at about 2 MPH and if I need more I let it all the way out again, and if it goes to fast, slap the clutch in and hit the brake. Once you get faster with all of the pedals, you'll figure it out. Or crash and give up on standards like a lot of people do..

  4. It is NEVER GOOD to ride the clutch.  It wears out the bearing.

But that takes second seat to safety.  If letting out the clutch makes the car go too fast, then that is what the clutch is there for.

    Good luck...

  5. Yes.  For reverse and pulling into parking spots, and slow driving around parking lots, etc.  Just hold the clutch around the catch point and give the car gas. If you go to fast just put the clutch in and brake if you need too.

It will only damage your transmission if you ride the clutch during regular driving on roads.

  6. It's never good to ride the clutch as it is a bad habit to get into.  However, having said that, if you're just pulling into a parking spot for example ( short distance ), it's not that bad.

What kind of car is this?  Every standard car I've driven has a very high gear ratio for reverse and when idling in reverse, the vehicles would only go about walking speed or so, not very fast at all.

  7. yes. it helps control your speed just DONT let off it to fast!!!
