Is it alright to tell my boyfriend that I'm on my periods? ?

He doesn't know I'm on my periods and said yesterday that my mood swings scare him, lol. I've known him for a year and we're VERY close so is it ok to tell him why I have mood swings?

I would suggest that after one year you really might feel safe to mention that "it's that time of the month" that makes for mood swings...

... He probably already knows but is equally awkward about saying it. It doesn't matter how long you have been with him, if a guy can't handle it when you tell him that you have your period then he shouldn't be with women. It is perfectly ok for you to explain it to him, he'll probably be grateful.

If he's a jerk and can't handle it then just tell him that it happens to 50% of the population and he should deal with it.

Remember, some guys are sexually educated as you think. Maybe he does not even have a clue that your mood swings and your periods are related! Just tell him and be honest about it and then he will understand how the female body works a little more. Then maybe next time you have a mood swing, he wont take it personally and will accommodate you and comfort you the way a good partner should. Communicate, communicate, communicate I say is  good for any relationship.

It's not like he doesn't know you menstruate. Any man over 16 should be able to deal with it.

of course it's ok, in fact it would probably only confirm his suspitions.  he may be trying to figure out if it is that or have you lost you mind or you just don't like him any more.  so do the guy a favor and fess up,  modern living means there is no stigma attached to biological functions.
