Question:

Is it an earned run if...?

There are two outs. The pitcher gives up a triple. A grounder goes to the shortstop (or any other infielder) who makes an error on the play resulting in the batter reaching first and the man on third scoring.

The guy getting to third was the pitcher's fault; however, the inning would have ended without a run if the SS had cleanly made the play. How would this be scored?

  1. it's an earned run. yes the inning should be over but anyone who reaches on base, let it be walk, hit, hbp, fielder's choice, if they cross home it's an earned run.

  2. If it is judged that the error prevented the third out of the inning then it is an unearned run and no RBI for the batter (only time an error does not allow and RBI to be scored)

  3. ANY run scored after three outs should have been made if not for errors/passed balls is an UNearned run.  If the error was not made, the third out would have resulted and the inning would be over.  The run is not earned.

Official Baseball Rules relevant rule is 10.16.  In short, reconstruct the inning without the errors and passed balls.  Without the error, if the scorer determines that the batter-runner would have been put out (and he obviously thinks so because he has charged an error to account for the batter reaching first base), the scorer should reconstruct the inning with a "what-if" mentality.  If the error didn't happen, the batter would have been out, and the run would not have scored.  That eliminates the run's status as an earned run.

  4. un earned run

  5. Definitely unearned because the error would have been the 3rd out and the run wouldn't have scored.

Even if the next 5 batters all hit home runs, their runs would be unearned as well because without the error, they wouldn't have batted that inning.

  6. that would be an unearded run because two outs and a runner at third if the defense didnt make that error that would be the end of the inning with no runners scored

  7. It is NOT an earned run because of the error on the play when the runner scored that may have contributed to the runner scoring

  8. Wadsworth is wrong. It's an unearned run. The run would not have scored had it not been for the error.

  9. Unearned
