Is it an eating disorder?

Hi, I have been weird about food for a long time now and I am just wondering what others think. I will eat normally for a while and I will gain some weight or something stressful will happen and I will decide I need to lose weight. I start restricting my food intake and start to loose weight, I feel good about myself but I will soon start eating a lot of fattening foods because i crave it. I feel guilty and afraid of gaining the weight back so I start throwing up and eventually that doesnt work and I use laxatives. I will usually eventually start eating ok for a while but it seems like a cycle, it has been happening on and off for 7 years. I don't feel like it could be an eating disorder because I don't count calories very often, I don't exercise very often and it not like I do the weird eating stuff all the time.

  1. you dont have to count calories or exercise to have an eating disorder, you are having eating cycles and are forcing yourself to vomit which is enough to have an eating disorder

  2. hey i have an eating disorder, and ya thats not normal..okay listen to this a calorie=calorie doesn't matter if its from fruit or hamburger just depends on the calories..sometimes you eat more of the higher calorie["fatty foods" have more calories]stuff like hamburger and don't feel as full and you would if you ate half the amount of calories in fruit, so you eat more food and you go over your calorie needs with time..please get help..i end up in the hospital and i don't want you to have the same problem..therapy is not as bad as you think..your be so much happier, and just because you still eat, your symtoms are close to the signs of bulmia..please get help..most bulmic can do good with out patient therapy

  3. 7 years of this behaviour, whether it is intermittent or not, screams loudly of an eating disorder which you try and contain yourself.  You need to get some counseling and find out the root causes.  Feelings of guilt and throwing up and using laxatives is not a healthy mindset.

  4. Yes, it is an eating disorder.  Eating disorders don't always involve calorie counting and can be episodic.  A good online resource and support for people with EDs is somethingfishy.com

  5. Eating disorder.

  6. No I have similar problems; it's not a disorder because you still are eating. I think its just the pressure society puts on all women to be thin. dont worry; as long as your weight is healthy its not a disorderr

  7. i agree i think it is a eating disorder.

you need to tell someone about it. if you dont you will be worse then before.

  8. Yes, this is bulimia because you are making yourself throw up but not necessarily counting calories.  Bulimia is a progressive disorder which just becomes worse the longer you hide it; it will eventually ruin your body if you do not get treatment for it.  You need to tell a doctor about this AS SOON AS YOU CAN.  There's no reason to chance your heath.

  9. Sounds like a disorder to me

Force yourself into a regular diet

  10. Well, you seem to be a disordered eater. Not necessarily eating disordered (which you may be on the path to), but a disordered eater. And yes, there is a difference. A disordered eater is someone who has small rituals with food or has little "things" about the foods they can eat and an obsession with weight. An eating disordered individual has more severe and chronic patterns of restrictive eating and binge-purge behaviors. They also fit the diagnostic criteria for an eating disorders as well as maintaining a severe obsession with weight gain and weight loss and frequent ritualized eating patterns and behaviors. In any case, I would suggest that you contact your primary health care provider and ask him/her to run an eating disorder screening analysis on you. Best wishes!
