  1. No, however I have had waiters/waitresses ask me this.  I know they don't get paid a lot and have to deal with rude people all the time, but a tip is like a handout.  It's something we as customers are giving them out of the goodness of our hearts, it's basically free money.  So they should be happy we give them anything.

I don't know what K-jO is talking about, but in the US you have to pay anyone, no matter who they are, where they are in the US or what their job is at least minimum wage (which is around $7/hour these days) So servers have to make at least $7 an hour.

  2. No. At more upscale restaurants, they will include the tip in your bill. If the waiter is doing this, he's wrong and out of line.

  3. No!

I actually had a waitress that asked if I needed my change once. I would call the resturant where he works and let them know he is doing this. He will run their customers off this way.

You should've gave him a penny since he requested a tip.

I do believe in tipping though.... the amount depends on the service and bill.

  4. yes it is appropriate.

depending on what state you're in, servers don't get paid much. in texas its $2.13/hour plus tips. and in florida its only a dollar more than that. i doubt the waiter was trying to be rude.

  5. No, it is rude. I would tip less for that, or not tip at all.

  6. No way

  7. no it's very unprofessional. I too hate the do you need change question that wait staff asks asuming they're getting your change. If I get good service I tip well if I don't, my tip reflects that as well.

  8. Absolutely never. The polite thing for a server to do is simply run the credit card , or if you are paying cash, they should say "I'll be right back with your change" that way if the customer wants to speak up on the issue of whether they actually need change they can do so. Or they can say nothing and the server just gets the change. A server who ever brings up tips with customers is unprofessional and will likely not make it in the industry.

  9. Absolutely not! I'm a server and i would never do this. I do ask if they need change when paying with cash(without looking at how much they gave me) to avoid the guessing game, but never should they mention the tip. I would call and complain to the manager.
