Is it appropriate to give a wedding gift?

I work in a small office and for the last couple of months, have worked with my boss and one other person. My boss is getting married and having a large wedding, and he often speaks about his plans. I was a little surprised not to be invited to his wedding (I don't know his fiancee) but I am not upset, and wish them well. Is it appropriate to get a gift, or a card, or both, for someone who has not invited you?

If you like you boss enough to give him something then go ahead and give one but it is not expected for him to receive a gift from someone he didn't invite.  I would go with a cheesy card.

that's perfectly fine and very considerate of you

if i felt close enough to the person (especially if they were giving me all the details) yes i would still get them a gift even if i wasn't invited

It would be really nice for you to get a gift it would show thoughtfulness and also could get you promote..

You don't have to since he didn't invite you but it would be a nice gesture especially since he is your boss.  

It would be different if you worked in a big office and hardly ever had contact with him or if he weren't your boss.

It is very appropriate and generous of you to do so.  Even if you get him a card, that would be such a nice, and unexpected gesture.  You might not want to go all out with a present, because he then might feel guilty for not inviting you; even though you weren't offended by it.

well since you weren't on the guest list, it isn't required. but it can be a nice gesture. maybe you and the other co-worker could go in on a small gift card where they are registered.

Generally the staff get together to give a joint gift to the couple. If the other person you work with also isn't invited to the wedding, a joint gift would be appropriate. If the other person is going to the wedding then they will purchase a gift from themselves. Then you could choose a token gift from yourself to the couple.
