Question:

Is it appropriate to speak about personality on a cover letter?

I'm a university student in my last year, trying to get a part time job. Currently, on my cover letters, I speak about my past work experiences, and sometimes my education (where the experience I have doesn't cover the job description). However, a lot of the jobs I apply to are retail, whereas my experience and education are mostly office/business based. I don't think that my office experience will be taken seriously when applying for these positions, so I want to mention my personality and how I would be well suited because of it. Is this appropriate?

  1. I think maybe a little about your personality would be good, however, when are people's opinions about their own personalities compeltely accurate?  This is what the interview is for, they will find out much more about your personality when they speak with you face to face.

  2. Yes, your cover letter has to change according to your job description. If you are a people person, and friendly, willing to help, then these are what retailer are looking in the workers. And you should mention them, but not too much make the whole letter looks like YOU.

Read each job description carefully first, then after several jobs, then you can figure out what general these retailer are looking for, then you can update your cover letter to say you are willing to learn and like to work with ppl. Also, maybe change your resume a little bit, to emphasis on the good team worker you are etc..
