Question:

Is it appropriate to tip workers with Levis in Jamaica?

I've heard of people giving their waiter or other hotel worker Levi's because they aren't available there. Is this true? Is it considered tacky to give someone a pair of jeans for a tip? TIA.

  1. I would say YES it is a bit tacky.

Unless you are buying jeans for a family member or a friend (in which case you would KNOW their size beforehand), it woudl seem like you brought the jeans to throw away as CHARITY rather than a gratuity.

It would be different (and perhaps ok) if, for example, you were on a SECOND visit to a particular hotel and bought it for someone you thought was particularly worthy of a gift.

Levi's ARE available here, but they can be pricier than 'no name' clothing.

  2. YES! It's very tacky. I've never even heard of such a thing and you can get ANYTHING in Jamaica if u really want it TRUST me...besides Levi's aren't exactly on the "hip list". I say if all you have to offer are Levi's then a polite smile and some well wishes will suffice.

  3. heck no those pants cost like 20 dollars they owe you money back

  4. It is a bit tacky. How do you know their size anyway? lol. Levi's are available here and sometimes for much cheaper than they are at the online stores.

Lee's Fifth Avenue has them at a reasonable price.

I am not sure if it is approriate, though, to tip someone with clothing. $50 jeans... wow. Most people would probably appreciate a 20 more than them.

  5. yes it is tacky to give someone a pair of jeans as tip do you know if it will fit. If we want Levi's we know were to find it

  6. Trust me Jamaicans prefer the good ole greenback,it is really a bit tacky trust me we are not that desperate for Levi's.If we want Levi's we know where to go to get them.So leave the green back not the Levi's ok.

  7. OH PLEASE!!!!!! which crazy person told you that LEVI's arent in jamaica!!??????? that is so wrong tell that person to check their facts.. thats a huge lie... levi's re sold in jamaica... there aint no clothing that jamaica doesnt have.... a pair of levi's average JMD$4k and so because of that you find it being sold 'uptown'. (and i agree with an answerer above.. LEVI's arent on our HOTLIST anyway)if you get a waiter a pair of pants... them will just think your crazy!!!  the person who give you this info is mixing up jamaica with someplace else..
