Is it appropriate to wear black to MY vow renewal ceremony?

I am renewing my wedding vows & getting married in the eyes of my Catholic church. (10 year anniversary on August 29th) This is a Friday. We're going to have a 5 o'clock wedding & 7 o'clock dinner with family.

My husband is wearing black slacks and has chosen to wear a bright purple shirt with coordinating tie. My two boys will wear clothes to match their daddy. My oldest daughter is wearing a black dress with big purple, lavendar, and white circles and my youngest is wearing a purple dress also.

I bought a cream colored dress because I couldn't find a white one ANYWHERE that I liked even a smidge. So this creamish/ivory one is ok, but I have this little black dress that I've never worn...would match SO MUCh better...I like it A LOT...it's about knee length - very floaty - would look great in pictures and it is flattering to the body.

Can I wear black to my own vow renewal? Is it appropriate? It is an evening wedding...

  1. Don't wear black.  I would rather see you wear a dress that is off white or ivory with black accents.

  2. I've seen many people wear black for their wedding even for their first actual wedding day. You guys are renewing your vows, so there's nothing wrong with wearing the black dress. I'd make sure to add if possible a little color like the lavender and or purple like your shoes, eye rings, necklace. something you know what i mean right.

  3. too dark

    =/

  4. I just think it sends the wrong message. Would be nice if you wore bright purple to match your husband!

  5. Hi.  Of course it would be OK!  Think about it....the "guys" have been wearing black to their own weddings for decades...so why can't the ladies!

I think the little black dress would coordinate better with what everyone else is wearing than you sticking out with an ivory dress.

So, YES, go ahead and wear it.  I think it will be fine.

Congratulations on your 10 year anniversary.

  6. YES YES YES!  Definitely wear the black if you like it better and feel it would look better!

I renewed my vows last January and I wore black b/c it is the color i like myself best in and found a great black velvet outfit!
