  1. A good less debateable way to get the same result is to place the shaft of the club acroos the tops of your thighs when you are lining up to swing. You can hold the club in your right hand and point the head at your target then walk up to the club so it rests against your thighs.

Using a club to line you up is OK. Trevor Immelman oited his from behind the ball all week at Agusta and you see Tiger and other use their's to line up putts all the time. Not certain about resting it on the ground though since that is not commonly seen.

  2. I would say it's bad etiquette, because it would slow down the play of your round.

You would have to pick it up (or have comeone else pick it up) before you started your swing. (Rule 8-2a)

  3. it is bad etiquette, not to mention against the rules...it doesn't matter whether you pick it up before you swing you used an aid which is against the rules.

  4. No, and it's not against the rules either as long as you dont have it there when you actually hit the shot.  You can use it to help your set up and then play the shot with it; or if using a different club to line up with than hitting the shot, toss it away to the side where it's not being used as an aid when you hit the shot.  Oh yeah, don't do it on the green when you putt...that's just not cool to lay clubs on the green.

  5. You should be performing those drills on the driving range to build good habits for proper alignment. I hit all of my range shots using tees for alignment from the ball to the target and you can use a parallel line for your feet.  It is not appropriate on the golf course, however, you certainly can stand behind the ball and find a point of reference between the ball and your target (grass, leaf, etc).  Use that as an alignment tool.  Perfectly legal.
