Is it bad for a baby to sleep on its stomach?

I have a friend who is a new mom (3 months) and she puts her son to sleep on his stomach.

I was just wondering because I had always heard not to. Should I say something to her?

  1. Most sources now recommend putting infants to sleep on their backs the first twelve months of life.

Their slogan is "back to sleep"

  2. i think so he/she might throw up or not breath i think

  3. How old is the baby?  Once they can roll over on their own, no, it's totally fine.  But prior to that --- ALWAYS, ALWAYS put them on their back to sleep!!

  4. Babies should sleep on their backs.  This helps prevent SIDS.  Never put a baby to sleep on his or her tummy.

  5. yes. its going to die.

  6. I think so. When my little brother was a baby my mom put him 2 sleep like that and when she went to check on him his face was purple and he wasn't breathing. When the ambulance came we were lucky enough they were able to take care of it. They told us we were very lucky because he had actually died and they brought him back. No matter what though you should be checking up on the baby constantly and have him sleep in the same room as you the first couple months. However, make sure u dont spoil the baby and respons right away when it cries or carry him too much (it will b more independent when it grows up)

  7. Research has showing that babies who sleep on their stomachs are at higher risk for SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)

  8. Generally yes.  If the babe sleeps on a firm mattress and wears one of those sleep bags instead of a blanket, it is not as bad, but SIDS is a real problem and babies sleeping on the back did a huge amount to help decrease that problem.  hence the whole, "back to sleep, front to play" campaign.

Even side sleeping is better, though not 'recommended'  You may want to bring it up, but it is her choice.  They have not changed their mind about this in Many years

  9. They tell u not to, but they also tell u not to let the baby sleep on its back. They go back and forth all the time. They tell u to plop the baby on its side with blankets, but yet that contradicts the putting anything in the crib with the baby. My kids would only sleep on their stomach. They would wiggle out of the blanket if i put them up. As long as she keeps an eye on the baby it should be okay.

  10. Experts say that letting the baby sleep on their stomach will increase the chance of SIDS but sometimes a baby will refuse to sleep in any other position. My 3rd child refused to sleep any other way and the pediatrician said that if I have to let him sleep on his tummy then elevate the bassinet pad by rolling up a receiving blanket under the top of it so the baby is at an angle. If the baby is sleeping on your chest on their stomach that is different and very ok but if in a bassinet or crib I'd suggest elevating the mattress.

  11. YES never let a baby sleep on its stomach. it can suffocate!!

  12. Until the child can roll over the baby should be put to sleep on his/her back. This helps reduce the risk of SIDS.

  13. Babies should sleep on their backs. It helps prevent sids!

  14. Yes it is said to be bad. And in some cases the cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). I did let my daughter sleep on her stomach when she was able to lift her own head, she is fine. But I may have been lucky. Play it safe.

  15. Yes, I have heard it is--ask your pediatrician.

  16. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS PUT A BABY ON THEIR BACK TO SLEEP AND MAKE SURE NOTHING IS AROUND THEM AND THE BACKETS ARE SECURED DOWN SO THEY WONT SUFFOCATE. YOU COULD ROLL A BLANKET UP TO PROP THEM ON THEIR SIDE. YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS AGO THEY USED TO SAY IT WAS OKAY FOR A BABY TO SLLEP ON THEIR STOMACH, BUT NOW N DAYS IT'S NOT

  17. Before they can roll over yes

    SIDS is still a possibility

    unsure of the real reason

of SIDS however if you look at it

    from a logical perspective if

the baby can't roll over he can easily

be suffocated..but after they roll over

    and have that down pack

    it ok

  18. no one really knows what causes sids years ago they said babies must sleep on there stomachs and nows its on there backs...all of my kids (i have 3) 4 years, 2 years and 5 months all slept on there stomachs...BUT ask ur doc

  19. no...not really it will sufforcate

  20. Only if it suffocates.

  21. yes because they might suffocate my aunts sisters baby died that way at 3 months

  22. I know a lot of people advise against it.

However my son, who's now 11 almost always slept on his stomach. He was much more comfortable.

Obviously since he's 11 now, it was OK for him.
