Is it bad for a vehicle to drive at a high speed daily?

I commute to work each day via a highway on which the speed limit is 65 mph but most travel at a speed of at least 75-80 mph. Is traveling at this high speed for a period of about 33 miles one way bad for my vehicle (which is a gas guzzler since it is an SUV). Also, does a vehicle burn more gas travelling at a higher speed? Explain why. Thank you in advance!

  1. yes, it burns more gas at a higher speed, the closer your engine gets to idle speed, the more efficient it becomes, and since your top gear is meant to be close to idle at 55, when you go faster than this, the engine is running at higher rpm's..

it shouldn't hurt the vehicle though...

  2. It won't do signifigant damage to the car. The engine will be reving at higher RPM's (rotations per minute) so there will be more potential wear on the engine, plus the tempeture will increase slightly... all things that will shorten the life of the car slightly.

And yes, a car does burn signifigantly more gas at higher speeds. The higher the speed the faster the engine is going. It takes more gas to keep the engine going at those faster speeds. The main reason the speed limit is set at 65 is not for saftey (cars these days are still very safe at higher speeds) it is because of the amount of fuel used up to go faster. Engines are not very efficient at these higher speeds.

  3. It guzzlers 15% more so drive the speed limit. tickets are $150 or more 2 tankfuls LOL So leave 15 minutes earlyer. Less stress
