Or is this a superstition? Anyone have any good stories on why it is or isn't bad luck?

  1. Never heard that one. If it is out there, it is put out by the commercial wedding dress designers so we don't go to Joann's Fabrics and get a McCall's or Simplicity pattern and make a wedding dress  ourselves for cheap!

Make your own dress if you want dear. That's why there are wedding dress patterns in pattern books. And why they carry bridal dress fabrics at fabric stores.

    Good luck.

  2. If your good at sewing then go ahead! Its not bad luck and think the money you will save!

  3. It's not bad luck to make your own wedding dress.  However, I've been a bridal dressmaker and now work as a bridal consultant.  Let me tell you this, if it's your first wedding dress--you don't want it to be your own, and I'm telling you that from firsthand experience.  I thought I would be able to make my own wedding dress--sewing a wedding dress is MUCH more complex than simply sewing a dress, or tailoring a suit.  It's doable, but it's something you need to know what you're doing.  If there's someone in your family or a close friend who's done it, then ask if they'll be available to help you.  Unless you're sewing a very simple pattern, you're going to be dealing with more fabric than you're used to handling, and you're going to be freaking out about it staying clean.  You're also probably going to be dealing with more expensive fabrics than you're used to handling, and that right there gives me the willies every time--knowing that if I make a mistake on this fabric, it's $$ per yard, yadda yadda.  Also, if it's YOUR dress, you're going to be more stressed about it anyway.

However, if you're an accomplished dressmaker, have a good understanding of fit, have decent pattern making skills, then I'd say go for it.  You'll get the dress you want, no one else will have the same dress, you can embellish as much or as little as you'd like, you can alter patterns to suit your needs.  Good luck!

  4. I think it is only bad luck if you are a bad seamstress! Otherwise, you are saving heaps of money and will be making the exact dress you want. How could that be bad luck?!

  5. I thought the same thing, But i found out that no its not.

My aunt made her own dress and it worked out perfect.

Just make sure you know what you are doing.

Plus, why would you wanna make your own? You miss out on being the bride and going and trying on dresses and stuff.

  6. No, not as long as you aren't a professional fashion designer ^^

  7. It's superstition, besides you will appreciate it that much more, and with the money you can save, you can have a nice honeymoon, put down on a nice new home, or fatten your investments... Good Luck & Congratulations :)

  8. No, it is NOT bad luck.  Back in the 1960's, 1970's, many brides not only made their own gown...they made the bridesmaids gowns too!

No...there is no superstition on this at all.

  9. That is definitely a superstition, and I'd say reeks of Bull****. I'm been sewing since the age of 6, and I'm definitely making my own wedding dress. I mean, why go out and pay up to in the thousands for a dress that you'll then have to tailor, and probably won't be everything you want. By making your own dress, you can customize to fit you, exactly, and embellish it exactly as you want.

However, I'm going to say that you should definitely follow a pattern. From there, you can alter as you please, but be very careful if you want to design your own. You can end up with a huge mess on your hands. And remember, if something doesn't fit right, use darts to tailor it to your body. Also, do the beading before you sew, it's much easier, and only bead the top layer, preferably in Quilting thread, it's much more durable. But, if you do the bottom layer, you'll have the threads sticking to you.

I also suggest starting as soon as you possibly can. you don't want to be a week from your wedding and missing a dress.

    I hope this helps!

  10. It's not bad luck

but unless you're a designer - why would you wanna do it yourself? THere's so many other things you have to do as a bride.

  11. Nope, it's not bad luck.  My mom made hers and she's been happily married for 37 years!  (Just make sure your sewing skills are up to par and you give yourself more than enough to make it.)

  12. That is the weirdest thing I have ever heard.  What do you think brides did before manufactured clothing was the norm?  Prairie wives?  Women living during the Depression?  Women who lived during WWII rationing?
