Is it bad to be competitive all the time?

I'm very competitive and some girls hate that. Duh, why play if you don't want to play your best?! Like last night it was a casual match round robin type thing, and one girl said to me, "its just for fun." Well, for me fun means playing my best and obviously winning as a result of that. Am I wrong? I'm not cheering when the other person makes a mistake (unless I set some strategy up and hit an amazing shot that forced an error exactly as I planned it), but I avoid the Hewitt rejoicing over the errors of others.

If I make a mistake that was stupid and I should have easily hit it, or even if I hit a winner, but my footwork was off, I might shout out or something. So, big deal, what's wrong with thtat?? I have to compete!!!

  1. I am passionate about my game. If I hit a great shot I do the Sharapova or Serena fist pump and shout COME ON! Its more to psych myself up to keep fighting. Sometimes i have to be careful if I am ahead, I might slack off, so I don't want to get lazy and then do something dumb.

Some girls hate passion.  Just don't laugh at the other ones or mock them if they hit errors. Like you said, avoid the Hewitt thing. A great forced error is definitely worth celebrating (just not as loud as a winner!)

  2. No its not wrong, its good that you want to win (obviously) you go out and want to make your mark you play to win basically everyone does some just dont like admitting! Girls will just feel intimated by your ``competitiveness`` simple as that, jealous, they see your passion to win and they dont like it! Also if your hitting the ball well and get an excellent shot then your entitled to shout out or give a gesture to show your emotions!

  3. It's good to be competetive and it helps you win more but try not to show it too much or people will not like it.

  4. its fine in sports and competitions, but dont get competitive over dumb stuff like who can finsih there test first or something.

  5. When it comes to your sport, NO IT'S NOT BAD AT ALL.  If you want to become the best at what you do then you have to be competitive.  I Coach Track and I always tell my kids that even in practice they have to run, jump, or throw as if they are at a track meet.  You can't do your best if you don't try your hardest, and when do you try your hardest?  When you play in a competition.  Don't about what the other girls say or think, they obviously don't understand a winning attitude.  One thing I do suggest and I am sure you know this. ALWAYS BE A GOOD SPORT.

  6. We must be simpatico Nina.  I wonder sometimes why people are playing if they only want to hit the ball back and forth and "be nice".  As for me, I'm always out for excellence, whether it be practice or competition.  There's nothing wrong with us. The world is just made of different types of folks.

  7. I guess it depends on who you are playing with. If everyone else in your group wants to be nicey nicey, then you will stick out like a blue meanie.

It was like that for me on a broomball team years ago. I was chasing the ball and so was a small guy from the other team. It was a dead heat and neither of us let up. We both got there at exactly the same time and so he got knocked to the ice. He got all upset about me being rough with him and some of my team mates concurred. As far as I'm concerned he just chose to run into a brick wall. That was unwise. He could've let up too. I have to let him have the ball because he's smaller?? Pffft. Whatever. That was the wussy 90s mind you.

Maybe you need to play with people who are more up to your level. Lobbing the ball back and forth isn't that much fun. It is only OK if you are teaching someone how to play and don't want to turn them off.
