Is it bad to be tattooed/ have a tattoo as an actor/when you're an actor, in acting profession?

I'm currently training to get into the acting profession. I've been thinking about getting a Koi fish design on my back but I wouldn't want to be turned away from any roles on the count of being tattooed. To be fair, that's what make up artists are paid for but I'm wondering if it'd be a real pain to cover so if anyone has any info or opinions on that, please share!? If I think about it, it's not often you see an actor have to remove his top in a role. Less often seeing the actors back cos you don't wanna be looking at the back of their head lol

Opinions or experience? :D

  1. Partially it will depend on what kind of acting - TV, movies, stage, etc.  My sister & her husband are stage actors in NY and I get the idea that it wouldn't be a total deal killer with them.  I've certainly seen a number of actors who are tattooed on the stage.  Here at Shakespeare Santa Cruz on my campus, the actor playing Pale - Gene Gillette - in "Burn This" had work on his shoulder.  In his case,  it even enhanced the role (you'd have to know the play to know the why).

From what I can tell, it would probably be a mild general detriment but could be, in uncommon but not rare situations, a bonus.  With stage work I also get the idea that how you look isn't as important as how well you act.

  2. most times that actors have tattoos, they are covered with makeup if it poses a problem. having one on your back shouldn't be a problem, and if it were, they would probably use a body double for back shots.

  3. no don't do it tattoos are horrid!

  4. I think that if you are a phenomenal actor, you can do just about anything, but if you aren't, or you aren't recognized yet, then just be sure that you know how to cover up any tattoo that would get in the way of a part.

  5. usually they cover it with makeup, but it could be a huge statement because in photoshoots and stuff you'd be well known for your tattoo. =P so make sure it looks amazing or dont risk it.
