Is it bad to drive on reserve on my dirt bike with a full tank simply due to dirt in the regular gas line? I assume it still comes from the same place, but is it bad to ride with it like this, other then not knowing when your about to run low on gas?

  1. you will get more dirt when you are on reserve as it draws fuel from lower in the tank.clean your fuel tap use reserve only when required.

  2. A petcock with reserve simply has 2 inlets in the tank. The reserve inlet is lower in the tank. Riding on reserve won't hurt anything but You might run out of gas in a very inconvenient place.

  3. It does come from the same place, just farther down in the tank.  I always thought it a good idea to run on reserve once in a while to flush out the bottom of the tank, then change the fuel filter.

Don't make a habit of it though - if you run out of gas while on reserve, you're walking.

  4. You pretty much answered your own question. The only difference between "reserve" and "on" in the drain tube height inside the tank. They both have tiny screen like filters on them to sift out larger dirt. The "on" tube sits about 3 inches off the bottom of the tank and does this because most dirt will sink to the bottom and this helps keep fuel flowing better to the carbs/injectors and to give you a lucky break when your not paying attention to feul level, the extra quart of gas you can get on reserve will help you get where your going. The "reserve" drain sits on the bottom and thats where the dirt collects and regular use of that drain will help clog the filter and eventually will have to be cleaned or replaced or you won't have that luxury anymore.  But to some it up I guess you can't say its bad, but its not good. Even though both "reserve" and "on" let the same fuel to the same place its better to keep gas in the tank and keep it on "on"
