Is it bad to exercise while sick?

I have a cold and don't want to stop exercising, is it ok? I've done it the last couple days in the late afternoon when I am all sudafed'd up and feel the best during the day where I actually don't feel like I am struggling to get myself to exercise, but my cold seems a little worse today. Should I take a day off? I REALLY would rather not.

If I shouldn't exercise, why? I know I need to keep myself hydrated but I will drink a lot of water.

  1. Personally, I don't like to exercise sick but you can definitely go ahead and do it. It'd probably heal your sickness much quicker and get your mind off it!

  2. You should exercise, but take it easier then usual, because your body is struggling to fight off the pathogens.

However, rest is very good for your body right now.

  3. do it if it feels alright.  trust your body to tell you what it needs from you.  if it feels too exhausting to exercise you're body'd be telling you to rest.  if something hurts, like your throat or lungs, joints, etc. pay attention. sounds like you know your body but there are folks out there who will tell you it's bad to exercise when sick, but maybe they're just accustomed to looking for excuses for themselves when they are sick.???

  4. No

And it is the best to do it when you attacked by the cold actually..... :).

    Go for it. :)

  5. If your cold has gotten worse, I would suggest that you not exercise. You don't have to take multiple days off, just today to give your body time to rest. When you work out, your body has to use energy to help your muscles and joints recover. If it has to use this energy, there will be less energy for it to put towards recovering from your cold and fighting off germs. If you absolutely MUST exercise today (I DO know where you're coming from...exercise always puts my mind at ease :D ), then do something light like walking. Refrain from things that are more intense such as running or biking.

    Feel better soon! :)

  6. Usually you have to be sensible and listen to your body. If you feel worse today than yesterday you shouldn't really exercise. It takes up energy and if you're feeling below par anyway it will only make you worse. I normally lose weight when I'm sick anyway because my appetite is suppressed. A few days of not exercising isn't going to kill you and once you fell better you can take it up again.
