I am a journalist with a BS in Journalism and a M.S. in New Media. I have had 5 internships. I had a 6 month internship after I graduated in May 07 and now I am in my first full-time job. I've been at my job since December 07. I applied to a job in a school system doing design work. I wasn't looking for a job but a friend forwarded me this job description It was too good of a job to not apply too. I now have an interview next week. If I get an offer is it bad to leave my first job after 8 months. I work at a newspaper the job security these days are not great at all and I work with web design and video so I can get a job with other companies, Ultimately I want to be an English/Journalism teacher and will go back to school to get certification in the near future. With all that said is it a good idea to leave this job that I've been at 8 months to go to a new one that will allow me to do more design work and pays $8000 more a year. How long if i got the job would I have to work at the second job? (I do plan on going to get teacher certification soon) Thanks for your help in advance!

  1. No, but you don't want to leave a second job after a similiar span of time -- that starts to look suspicious -- so make sure you think you can stay with teh second job for a while (ideally, 2+ years). Of course, if you are going to leave the corporate world for teaching, all of this is somewhat less relevant, but no point burning bridges. Good luck!

  2. I never think it's bad to advance to a position that pays better and offers the opportunity to work more in the area you enjoy. I say go for it.

....unless you have signed a contract when hired, there's no reason you should feel obligated to stay anywhere...just be sure to give proper notice
