  1. YES ! It can damage your retna !

  2.   If you did that it would be the last solar eclipse you would observe.

  3. Most definitely, categorically, yes.

  4. It's as bad as looking straight into the Sun on a normal day.  The problem with solar eclipses is that they're a lot more interesting to look at than just the Sun in the sky alone, so you're more likely to do serious damage by staring at the Sun too long or staring at the Sun too often.

Interestingly, Isaac Newton documented how bad staring the Sun for 3 straight hours could be for your eyes - something he learned by practical experience.  He wound up virtually blind for days.  It wasn't exactly the highlight of an otherwise pretty illustrious career.

  5. Yes, it's bad, and it can damage your eyes.  It's rare that you'll ever be directly in line for a total solar eclipse (usually you just get a partial eclipse).  Even in a total eclipse, the moon blocks most of the sun, but not all of it, and that brightly glowing ring around the moon can be hurtful.  Regular sunglasses won't protect you.

It might not blind you instantly, but it is very bad for your irreplaceable eyes.
