Question:

Is it bad to lower a motorcycle?

I have an 07 gsxr750 and I noticed that it might have adjustable suspension. I wanted to know the pros and cons of lowering a bike? Will it effect it in the long run or be not as comfortable? Any info would be great, especially with experience. Thanks!

  1. The only adjustment you should consider is the preload and damping on the rear shock. Stiffer is good for the fast twisty stuff but a bugger on suburban streets with their potholes. Softer is good for the suburban stuff but the bike will wallow on the twisty stuff.

On my Harris Magnum 2 I would set it fairly soft for the streets then tighten it it when I got to our local hills. It was easily adjusted with a couple of fingers so this only took a few seconds.

Don't touch the fork heights unless you really know what you are doing as you will stuff up the steering geometry. It can be done, but the bike needs to be sorted by someone with the experience, such as a race mechanic.

  2. I don't think that it's a height adjustment, I think it stiffens or softens the ride. The engineers know what they are doing and they set the height of a bike at its best all around height. Unless you really know what you are doing you can get yourself in trouble by trying to change things.
