Is it bad to play a bass guitar through a electric guitar amp?

Because it sounds awesome. Especially with a Distortion Pedal. I am just afraid it will like explode or something. I was under the impression that Bass guitars did not work with regular amps. Is it safe?

The low notes can do a lot of damage to a guitar amp.

I think it might not be good because of the lower frequencies from a bass, could ruin the speakers inside.  I havent tried  it though because i wont want to break an expensive amp.
