I have always unplugged my computer & modem in a lightning storm. It is a small risk, but my dad had his electric or phone box can't remember which) hit by lightning and it fried his computers, tv's, & phones.

lightning is common, and  to hit your phone line or power line is likely to happen. My modem was hit through the phone line one year and my x-box fried after our transformer was hit. I would always use serge protectors on my PC and other electronics and if you don't have them unplug the computer.

It's bad to have your computer connected to the electricity and internet while there is lightning, whether it is turned off or on.  Two years ago, I had lightning hit the telephone box outside my house while I was sleeping one night, and it fried my computer even though it was shut down.  They say lightning can travel through wireless connections as well.
