yes, if even if the computer is plugged in at the mains but not switched on, the lightening could catch the house, and an electrical surge could occur, travel up your plugs into your comp and fry the computer.

Always unplugged computers when there's storms.

Yes, it is good idea to shut down computer. Not so much because you risk being electrocuted, but because a power surge my damage your computer. Even with a surge protector, it is best not to risk damage to your computer.

Yes it is recommened to Turn Off your computer when there is a storm because Lightening strikes could cause damage to either the computer or the internet cables.

I agree with the others.  Computer off if lightning is around, especially if you live in a country type area.

In the country, I've seen a light bulb "turned on", one that was turned on blew, and the answering machine was fried.  That was from the lightning hitting the power lines and travelling out to the houses.  The less houses to distribute the excess power among, the more potent it is.
