  1. Will have to have a modem to have internet. If you have more than one computer you want to be on the internet, you will also have to buy a router. So, you'll have a modem for the internet, and a router to get internet on all computers.

  2. I'd say router because you can have more than 1 connection with it. If you have only one computer though, go with the modem.

  3. If you are connecting to one computer (directly) I would go with a modem.  Routers are used for wireless and can support multiple computers.  There is really no difference in speed between the two.  But you can give it a try.

A modem is more secure.  People cannot log into your network.  A router is more useful.  Multiple people can share information.

  4. routers and modems perform two different functions, so i would ask the advice of a local expert to explain whats going on because usually you need both.

Modems recieve the signal from the outside world, and translate the signal into a form that the computer can easily understand.

Routers, take the translated signal from the modem and manage its direction through multiple computers.

you may want clarification from whoever you spoke to. but in general if you have a high speed network with multiple computers you will want to have a modem and a router.

Some companies offer modems with built in routers. but the router function is usually pretty poor, so you should usually ask to get a modem with a router, and buy your own router. or if they still give you the combo modem, ask how to bypass the router and plug in your own router.

  5. You should have a router if you have high speed internet as well as a cable/dsl "modem". They serve different functions.

Even if you only have one computer on your home network, get a router. Your router will block unwanted probes from the internet. These "pings" look for vulnerabilities in your system. A router will make sure that your ports are invisible to the outside world. And don't get those two in one pieces of c**p that the isp company wants to sell you. Get a separate modem and a separate router.

  6. Strictly speaking the term "Modem" is generally used in the wrong context. Modem is a term that came from the Modulate-demodulate actions of a Dialup Modem. You hear the screaching when you dial a phone number, on your PC. The modems are negotiating communication protocols and security. they are modulating and demodulating.

The term has been applied to DSL Routers and WiFi routers as well.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers
