Is it best to use plain cinnamon or cinnamon and sugar to get rid of ants?

I have read to use cinnamon OR to use a mix of cinnamon and sugar. I guess the sugar mix theory being that they will pick up the sugar and take back to the colony. If I only use cinnamon will that only deter them and then they will find another entry or place in the house?

  1. If you want to get rid of them

    --------------------------------------...

The first thing to do is clean up the area concerned:

1)sweep up any visible ants and put them away from the affected area or squash them

2)remove any food which might be attracting them

    3)remove any water sources

4)remove anything which they can hide under such as pots or wood

5)get rid of aphids from your garden as ants are attracted by their excrement

    --------------------------------------...

Then to prevent them you need to:

1)spread crushed mint (especially spearmint) in the affected area to deter ants

2)cucumber is another deterrent for ants so try spreading a few slices around the problem area

3)sprinkle chilli powder, cayenne pepper, cinnamon, salt or talc powder on ant trails and in cracks near your house

4)sprinkle borax on ant trails and in cracks in pavement

find the ant nest by placing sugar on the ground and following them home, then pour boiling water down the hole to kill them

make an organic spray repellent of citrus peel and water (mix in a blender) and spray ants on the ground or in their nest

spray ants directly with soapy water made using dishwashing detergent

    --------------------------------------...

or if your not bother about being organic:

    1) Ant rid on high traffic arrea's or

    2) try the following recipe.

When the weather warms up and water becomes scarce, the ants come marching in. They sneak in through cracks, and get into everything, but what they're really after is water. Don from Loxton has a recipe that he says makes ants go away.

    What you need:

    2 cups sugar

    2 tablespoons of powdered borax

    1 cup of boiling water

    Method:

Add the above items into a saucepan.

Put it on the stove and boil for three minutes, stirring continuously.

It will finish up with a honey consistency.

Put it on the ant tracks or near their holes, and Don says in about four hours time the ants will be gone.

    3) if that doesnt work you may need the help of a professional pest controller, some of them do use organic products.

  2. Just plain cinnamon... Sugar will just attract them... Cinnamon doesn't kill ants they just don't like it so they avoid it... They will generally avaoid the house if cinnamon deters them from one entrance...

  3. I heard fresh mint works.

  4. Cinnamon won't get rid of ants.  Many things might act as temporary barriers if they won't want to walk across it - folks use all kinds of powdery things - but it won't kill them or make them leave.

What kills ants is commercially available baits under a variety of brand names - the home remedy is a 5% boric acid solution (using borax) with plenty of sugar in it.  The trick is to not have the right concentration of borax, as too much will be unpalatable and too little won't kill the queens.  You can buy formulated baits that'll do the job well.

Long term, to control ants - you need to fix water leaks, keep food away from them, and eliminate them from the perimeter of the property.  Ants move into houses with changes of the weather.

I'm all crunchy-granola-organic, but the fact is you can't just stop ants using stuff from your cabinet.  It'll involve a bigger change in your space.  If you live in a dry climate, a sure way to do this is to not irrigate landscaping around your home.  As long as you have water dripping and the pest ants are in your neighborhood, then you'll behaving ant problems.

  5. Here's my fool-proof remedy for getting rid

of household ants. Go to the drugstore (or you may have some in your medicine cabinet) and get some cheap

eyewash.  The main ingredient is usually

    boric acid.

Squeeze a little trail wherever the ants are

busy.  Over this little wet trail, sprinkle

a few grains of sugar along the trail.

If you look early in the morning, you will see 100s of ants sipping the delicious

nectar.  Problem is that it's their last drink.

  6. As far as I know, fresh Mint hung or laid in areas will definitely scoot the little rascals. Please try before you disregard. Clorox does wonders too.

    Good luck and no bugs.

  7. A trail of lemon juice will deter them.

  8. Place finely ground corn-flower near their holes. They love it but cannot digest it and it will cause them to die.

  9. Cess,

To my knowledge, and it does work......Three things are required.........

1...Keep your kitchen, living area clean.(take out all garbage)

2 All of the above. Each Evening........

3Place white chalk(DRAW)around your home....If you are lucky enough,to find the nest..........Pour boiling water down same.As you need to kill the Queen, and her Drones who protect Her at all cost...
