you cannot get a straight answer to this question... that's because there is no right answer, its all is your strategy, at points in the game it will be more important to take an opponents piece, and yet in other times of the same game it maybe more of a benefit to you to have control over an area of the board making it your objective to control a square

It is better to control squares and attack pieces.  The reason you control squares is to develop an attack that checkmates the opponents king, therefore you must attack pieces to get to the king.
