Is it better to book ahead hostels or just show up?

I'm doing a couple weeks in europe for the first time ever. does anyone have any experience with hostels? would i get a better price booking a few weeks in advance, or just showing up? fyi, i'll be traveling with about 5 people during the end of november. thanks!

It's doubtful that you will get a better price only a couple of weeks in advance - but you will at least be sure of a room in a hostel, and not have to pay for a more expensive hotel

If you were going July-August I would say most definately book the rooms as it is peak season and then you could run into trouble depending on where you want to go

However end of Nov will be a lot quieter, and actually if you are prepared to be cheeky you may actually be able to bargin on the spot as there are not so many tourists, and hostels/hotels will want your business

However, check out first where you are planning to go.  If there is a concert or festival or something, it may be that this could affect availability, but otherwise it won't be a problem
