Question:

Is it better to draft a 4th RB and WR first or a Top-Tier Kicker and Defense first?

The the league I'm in, there is no WR/RB slot , only 2 RB and 2 WR slots with the option of going 3RB 1WR or 1RB 3WR. With my 9th and 10th picks, would it be smarter to add some insurance with a 4th RB and WR even though they may never start, or get a premier kicker and defense?

  1. RB and WR first

  2. 4th RB/WR first.  Without a doubt.  The scoring differential between kickers isn't significant enough to justify picking them earlier.  But then again, its your team, if you have a gut feeling you should play it.

  3. Everyone says save Kickers and Defense for last.  I couldn't disagree more.  Yes, dont waste a high or semi-high pick on them, but a great def/sp and kicker vs average ones could get you that extra win.  Kickers come and go, so what you want to look for with them is consistency.  I like Shayne Graham the best, he has been the most consistent over the last few years and kicks for a high powered offense.  For Defense I like the Vikings or Chargers.

If I were you I would pick up a top tier Defense, then that 4th RB/WR, then a top tier kicker.

  4. You want depth especially at RB, injuries can kill you if you dont draft wisely with them. WR is a bit different in your format, I would draft a good defnse before a 4th receiver (and might even do it before picking a 4th RB). The dropoff from the elite defenses to the average ones is steep but that is not true of kickers. I would wait until the 13th or 14th round to grab a kicker. Mason Crosby was the top scoring kicker last year....how many guys passed him up for one of the so called "great" kickers? Oh yea, Rod Bironas was the 2nd highest scoring kicker, I picked him up on the free agent list last year in 4 different leagues and outscored other teams in kicking who picked Viniateri and Folk early. Get the defense when the run on them starts, wait for your kicker until very late....keep in mind kickers are subject to how good their team is from year to year and every year some kicker emerges from nowhere (remember nobody thought to draft the top 2 kickers last year early or what about the year before when Rackers led the league in scoring, nobody heard of him before then).
