  1. You want to water deeply once a week.Water an hour or longer. It is true that roots should be made to grow deeply to withstand periods of drought, but research has shown that several wateings a week produce shallow roots. You are meeting the plants needs with shallow watering, and they have no need to grow deeper. One deep watering hydrates the plant well (grass in your case), and it is better  able to withstand a dry period before the next watering. This dry period is what forces roots to grow deeper in search of water. With more frequent waterings they will never grow deeper than the depth of water you are giving them.To prevent fungus you wnt to water in the morning, not the evening. This allows the blades to dry quickly by the sun.It is evening watering that leaves the blades wet over night that allows fungal growth.Perhaps lawn man meant afternoon which would still allow the blades time to dry before sundown. This would actually be preferable not only because blades have time to dry, but less water is lost from the upper soil by evaporation from a full day of hot sun in the summer months.

  2. Let me set things straight for you.  Lawns need to be watered deeply and infrequently.  The lawn needs an inch to an inch and a half of water per week.  So the thing to do it to water every other day and put down 1/2 of an inch.  Water each zone for 45 mins to 1 hour every other day.  And DO NOT water in the evening unless you want your neigbor to get fungus.  Unless you live deep in the southwest you need to water in the early morning or fungus will develope.

If you don't water deeply as discribed the grass will develope a shallow root system.  Watering for 10 minutes is not considered watering deeply.

  3. A little each day.  A lot of water will work for a day, then dry up and be gone.  Be sure to water in the evening or the morning.  Water during the day evaporates quickly, and can kill the grass, because the water on the blades of grss magnifies the sun, which can then burn up the blade.

By the way, its unlikely the grass is dead.  More likely its just dormant, so watering will bring it back.

  4. lawns do best when watered 3 times a week for about 10 minutes.  you want the roots to go deep and surface watering keep them at the surface where they dry out faster.
