  1. a fan is better for the environment, but having the door closed is better when running a/c

  2. fepends on whether you want to cool other rooms or just the bedroom

  3. Closed if you like to sleep in cold temperatures

  4. closed

  5. Assuming that you are speaking of a whole house system -The system works best when all the doors and vents are open.  Some of the vents are for intake and some for output, but the house needs to equalize.

But, if you are speaking of "window units"- it is best to place the units in the rooms you use the most and just cool those rooms, with the doors shut - you'll use less energy.  This is what we do in our house.  We only cool two rooms during the hottest part of summer, and heat only two rooms during the coldest part of winter.  It means that for four or five months of the year we only live in about 600 sqft of our house, the rest of the year we spread out into 1800 sqft.  However, our energy bills are less than $50.00/month even with the new higher prices.

  6. Unless you have vents for flow over the doors, open is best. Air needs to circulate to do proper cooling and heating.

  7. Open doors are better.  If the doors are closed, air flow within the house is constricted, and places more strain on the equipment.  With the doors open, the air circulates more freely.
