Question:

Is it better to install an over-the-range microwave directly on the wall or over back splash tiles?

I have a blank kitchen wall that I'm planning to install both a new porcelain tile back splash and microwave on. I can't decide if I should put down the tile and then install the microwave on top of the tile OR install the microwave on the wall and then tile around it. Any thoughts to if one is better than the other. Thanks.

  1. I agree. Install it over the tiles but here is the catch. Depending on the type of tiles, make sure you locate the studs behind the wall and use a good drill specifically made for tile. Over the counter microwaves are heavy and they have their own mounting bracket that must be installed first. Then the unit is hung on the bracket. Follow the manufacturers directions but you will have to drill four holes in the tiles to install the mounting bracket. If you have never done this; get experienced help.

  2. you could have a shelve made and install it to the wall the plug will be behind the microwave so you wont see the cord , it all depends if you have enough cupboard space you could even remove the doors and shelves add an out let and your done

  3. It is better to put the tile then install the microwave, this way if you ever have to change micro-hoods and the new one isn't the same size then you won't have to do a thing and you won't see the outline of the old one. You are not out much time or money to do it this way either. Good Luck
