  1. You need to do both. A teacher can help by being there for support and guidance. A teacher has a broader knowledge than students of books and projects and experiments and research in the field, so can shortcut learning by matching your desires and interests with appropriate materials or classroom activities.

At the same time, you yourself have a responsibility in learning. You don't want just to sit in a class, passively writing notes and taking down everything a teacher says. You need to be--as we call it--engaged, and an active learner.

How do you become a more-active learner?

You go to class. All the time. You do your homework and read ahead - not just, what is assigned.

You ask questions. You think. You use reading skills like annotating textbooks, looking up unfamiliar terms in a dictionary, making sure you know the meaning of words and terms in the field you are studying - maybe making flash cards for concepts and having friends quiz you on them. You watch television programs in your field of interest--like the great National Geographic program on Stonehenge that recently aired...

You prowl the internet for knowledge - again, in your field of interest. And you bring that thirst for knowledge into the classroom and focus on learning and questioning and gradually growing in understanding.

You take an active, a pro-active role in learning HOW to learn. Good luck. Self-study works, but having the teacher around to guide and, as they say, facilitate - helps a lot.

  2. Learn what?  Whatever it is, it's probably easier with a teacher.
