Question:

Is it better to let a bunny live in a cage and let her run around at night or, run around without a cage?

I have a bunny and in a previous question I asked I was told to let her run free, but i am not sure if a cage is right for her or if just letting her run is better. She has a tendoncy to hide from me (inside chairs, behind a desk, under stairs) and I think if i let her have free roam of the basement (where she lives) that she could hurt herself! But if letting her run around all day is best for her then maybe I could try and make different arrangements for her... HELP PLEASE!!

  1. You can let her run around during the daytime when you can watch her.  Keep her in the cage at night for her own safety.  Not sure who told you she should be allowed to run free all the time.  Either they were just messing with you or they have a room in their home completely bunny proof and dedicated to the rabbit.  They aren't going to babysit your bunny while you sleep, now are they?  Best just to keep her in her cage when you are not around.

  2. she needs to be in a cage while you are not supervising her like when you sleep or at work.

get some baby gates and pin off an area for her to play in so she can't run under things you don't want her to.

or clear out a spare room and make it the bunny's room to run around in with chewy toys and food water and cage so she can do what she wants to. might try to litter train her of you want her cage free. you will have to clean up the room often.

i hope something works for you very soon.

  3. Don't give your bunny freedom unless you can give her total supervision.  She can get into lots of trouble.  She can chews on wires and eat plants and such.  You don't want her to do any damage and you don't want her to get sick.  Make sure that you have a nice size cage for her.  I have a play pen for my rabbit too so she has freedom but she is contained.  Also, you could close the doors to a room and set her free in there.  I wouldn't want to let it roam free if it weren't litter box trained.

  4. well i let mine run out side with our chickens but it still hides from me...i would say if the weather is good go to a pet store and get the rabbit a RABBIT leash  and just take it on a walk everyday for exercise if you want to keep it in a cage OR  just make it a pen out side like 5 feet by 5 ya no enough for it to run  i  would not let it lose i n my house cause 1 they chew on stuff and hide any were and everywere so  i would not say that OR just make it a 5"5 foot cage inside you choose but thats wat i would do any of them if i had to

  5. Almost all bunnies hide from people at first. Once they are comfortable THEN they tend to be more social. Letting the bunny roam free is a great idea. IF, you are set up for it. Any place that is bunny proof. Even with that its best to supervise any area the bunny is left to roam.  I personaly closed off a small section of my apartment for just the bunny, I used the baby proof gates to close it off.

It's very important that you let the bunny out to excercise! But be sure to do it safely

  6. That depends how much you let her run around during the day.  Its very very important that bunnies spend a lot of time outside of their cage.  They need space to run around in so that their hip and leg muscles don't go bad like SO many rabbits do when they are kept in cages.  That condition will be very painful for her and then you'd have to put her to sleep.

My rabbit roamed the entire house free.  We put hard plastic covering over all electrical outlets and cords.  We made sure that at least the living room was free of small objects that she could swallow or get hurt on...and if the rest of the house wasn't safe then we closed the living room off.  AT FIRST she hid, but eventually she claimed that living room like a queen and ended up hopping on top of this stool for all to see.  Even with guests over.  She lived a long and healthy life...and it was nice to know that we really did treat her like a queen. lol ive never owned a pet with more personality and spunk than that rabbit.

EDIT:  I forgot to mention that I was lucky my rabbit was a clean freak...she was MORE than potty trained.  Even during events like fourth of july when she got really scared and went "potty" uncontrollably she wud spend the whole night in her potty....lol because she couldn't stand doing it anywhere else.

  7. setting completely free on outer is dangerous, if you have guarded window then you can set it free in your room at night, it will be better if you dedicate a whole room to it....

  8. Please supervise her if she runs free around any cords or wires. When i was younger i had a rabbit and it chewed through the cords in my parents music room and got electricuted besides ruining $2000 worth of equipment.
