Question:

Is it better to live on the 1st floor or 3rd floor of a building?

I have my choice between two identical 1-bedroom apartments in the same building. The 3rd floor unit makes me have to walk up a somewhat narrow stair case, but it gets more light -- otherwise, they're the same.

The first floor unit may get more bugs (I hate bugs). Also, I'd like to do exercise, so I don't want people below me to complain.

What do you think? Advantages & disadvantages of each?

  1. on the third floor, you dont have to worry as much about burglars, you get a nicer view, but you have to worry about the people below you.

    i'd choooose the 3rd

  2. PROS

first-1. easy to move in and out of.  Don't have to worry about furniture fitting.  2. You don't have to worry about making to much noise with the people below.  3.If there was a fire easy way out. 4. Don't have to carry everything you buy or laundry upi the stairs.  5. If you party alot you don't have to walk your drunk a** up three flights of stairs.  Patios are always better then a balcony.

third - 1. more light.  2. more secure.

    CONS-

first - 1.  Yes someone could break in but you can always put a stick in the door.

third-  see all the pros to the first floor.

  3. OK i think there is more pros 4 the 1st story and the second has alot more problems. and u have a lot of actives that do not fit a 3rd story. plus the only thing bad in the 1st story is bugs and u can fix that w/ an extermanitor. and there r problems w/ the 3rd story that u CANT fix. in conclusion i say u should pick the 1st story. but this isnt my life so make the choice urself. good luck. i mean it. u seem cool and i hope u make the right decision 4 urself. ♥

  4. on the third floor you don't have to worry about leaving the windows open as much-- people can't just climb in where as on the first floor that is something to worry about.

  5. Like Lanie said if you have the third floor you don't have to worry about people climbing in through the windows.

If you have the first floor you don't have to worry about bothering people when you exercise, and if there is a fire you can get out fast. But you have a nice balcony in which people wont disturb you in and throw stuff in if you take the 3rd floor.

  6. First is best. You don't have to lug stuff up the stairs when moving or even bringing in groceries, also heat rises so in the warmer months it can get unbearable. You'll be happier on the first. Byee

  7. 3rd floor:

    1) Much safer (it's hard to break into a floor from the outside if you need to go through a window).

    2) Much quieter.

    3) If the house is near a turn and you live on the first floor, you will be constantly dealing with car lights coming into your window.

    4) No upstairs noise (assuming it's a 3 story house).

  8. You'd have to climb the stairs more on the upper level, but I think it'd be better.  As far as exercising, maybe you could talk to your downstairs neighbor and tell them that you like to exercise but don't want to disturb them.  Perhaps you could find out what time would be best for all of you.  If you talk to them they will realize that you want to be considerate and I'll be they'll give you a break.

  9. If you are just getting old say if you are in your forties or fifties then go for third floor apartment to make you walk in stairs more that's good for your health. Higher floor is always priced more due to more of light and air to people in a high rise apartment block but in your case its just first and third floor does not make much of a difference! But if you are too old just above seventy then go for first floor but always check whether you have good and brave and helping nature people near to you to help you in emergency irrespective of the floor! Check also the risk and problem free like water, security etc for you in third floor and if everything is fine the higher floor is always better!

  10. Third floor.  No noise from above.

  11. I typically take the up stairs apartments.  Less pests, more security, automatic exercise, better view.  It sounds like you have more reasons for the upper one anyway and just want a second opinion.  Go for the 3rd floor.
