I will be flying into Frankfurt but actually staying in Saarbrucken this summer. I am wondering whether I should buy my tickets in advance or just wait until I get in.

  1. I have never had a problem buying tickets when I get there.  I will note that buying single tickets in the US usually involves a significant markup.  The only problem you might have is if you plan to travel via ICE train - they have reserved seats.  Still you should be able to buy a ticket when you get there.

  2. Don't worry.Get your tickets at the airport train station in Frankfurt. No markups ,means cheaper tickets and you can reserve seats on ICE trains if you want to,but no need for that, you always will have  a seat on High Speed trains.

Enjoy your stay and the trains.

Have a beer for me over there, will ya ?

  3. In addition to the first answer, there may also be special deals like weekend tickets available at the travel center or vending machines. If you book in advance you are committed to that specific train and route. If your plans change, you´re outta luck...

  4. My recommendation is to purchase the tickets ahead of time.  That way you can ensure yourself of a seat on the train and won't have to stand for the 2 hours it takes to get from Frankfurt to Saarbrueken.

  5. buy them in advance.

  6. If you buy your tickets in advance you can get special discount prices (Sparpreis or Supersparpreis).

You might want to check at www.bahn.de how much the difference is. If the savings are low it's not worth to book in advance, because you're tied to a special train and re-booking is difficult (just like with flights).

A normal price ticket allows you to take any train on that route.
