Question:

Is it better to "mod" a regular Jeep or buy a Rubicon?

I'm talking selectable hubs, lockers, bigger wheels, lifts, etc. I know the Rubicon has a lower range transfer case and that would be an expensive mod for a regular Wrangler.

  1. depends on what you want to do.  rubi's have d44 axles with lockers and a few other mods over a "regular" jeep.

they are not necessarily the top of the line components that are available after market.

you need to weigh that against buying a component outright or having it upgraded by jeep.

i bought a 2006 rubi and am quite satisfied with the set-up.  there are some mods that i am interested in, such as stronger axles and such.

my advice would be to go with the rubi, but do not add any extras such as factory bumpers.

after market is much better and cheaper.

  2. I was in the same boat looking at a new (JK) Wrangler Unlimited Sahara vs Rubicon.

The differences between the JK Sahara and Rubicon were:

    JK Rubicon had:

    1) lower range Transfer Case

    2) Dana 44's front & rear

    3) Quick Disco Swaybar

    4) 4:10 gears

    5) Could upgrade to power options about $1K upgrade.

    JK Sahara had:

    1) power options standard (Windows & Locks)

    2) Dana 30's front Dana 44's rear

    3) 3:21 rear axle upgraded to only 3:73 with tow package

    4) Color matching fender flares.

    5) Mopar side steps

I went with the Sahara as the Rubicon's had a 6month delivery for the Rescue Green Unlimited 4 door with 6 speed.

Things you should consider is the size of tire you are looking at getting.  The Rubicon's 4:10 will push a 35" tire very well were as a 3:73 I found is a dog pushing a 35" mudder and therefore, I upgraded to 4:88 gearing.   Also, I have spent alittle more on upgrading to to Dana 44 front but found one used for a good deal.   Quick Disco (Sway bar) from JKS cost about $120.00 and is not really that difficult to disconnect at the trail and I have heard some electrical issues with the Quick disconnect on the new JK's.

Suspension lifts & Budget Boost will run the same regardless if you have an X, Sahara or Rubicon.
