If you bought a junky old home (108 years old) and you wanted to do a complete make over, do people usually do the inside or the outside first? basically everything probably except for new shingles.

  1. Inside first....you'll be more comfortable sooner plus you can save on your property taxes just a bit until you get to the outside renovations because they will go up some with the improvements.

  2. Outside first. Especially if windows are involved.

  3. Outside  in case you need to sell sometime soon...curb appeal, THEN the start with the kitchen then bath, living and bath last. May I also suggest to get the blown in type insulation for your walls done from the outside before you do anything else.....then get a new furnace this will save you ooodles the first year...We bought an old home 10 yrs ago and did it the WRONG way :)

  4. i would think the inside first...cz u dont want to live in this lovely house and then come inside and its junk, u know...

  5. The professionals always say to start in the master bedroom, because when you wake up and go to bed every night you see and feel a sense of accomplishment.  However, I have always done the room with the least amount of work first.  The outside is nice because of curb appeal, but with fall approaching I'd say turn your focus inside until the spring.

  6. Outside to inside.  There's no point in plastering and painting and papering inside while the windows still need to be replaced or the roof still leaks.  Make the structure sound first then work on the inside.  Besides, you never know when something they turn up while working on the outside will require them to tear out a wall or tear up a floor to fix it properly.

  7. you need to live in the house ,therefore fix the inside first and clean up the outside if there is tall grass cut it if there is garbage pick it up and that will give your neighbour the feel that eventually you will work on the outside , concentrate on your needs first and the public second. If the roof is good the facade can wait.

  8. outside might be better...thats wat people look at ;)

  9. always start with the big jobs first, the roof, foundation, plumbing, electrical, heating and air, any extensions and the like. then work your way from outside in, easier to keep clean and since you have to live more with the inside it'll give you more time to really consider what you want to do.  once you're inside work from the lowest point up (ie floor wall ceiling) in the highest part of the house, since the ground floor has the most traffic you'll want to leave this for last (again better for clean up and ware and tare)

  10. According to the Remodeling Industry, for the third year in a row, the highest return on investment is to do the outside first, followed by kitchen and then bathrooms.  This is based on return on investment when you sell your home.

If it were my home, and we intended to live in it long term, the first projects would be the ones that made me the most comfortable.  Then work toward the ones that are purely aesthetic.
