Question:

Is it better to run or jog a mile?

I'm in junior high, and I have a mile time of around 8:30 to 9 minutes and I would really like to improve it.

So how should I plan my pace to get a better mile time?

Examples: run the whole time, or jog the whole time, or jog the first half then run the last half.

Any other tips would be appreciated. :)

  1. Jog first to warm up, then run the rest.

If your going for longer stamina just jog quickly

  2. Run a mile as hard as you can everyday any that 8:30-9 time will drop like a rock. stretch out for ten minutes and briskly walk 800m before starting as a warmup. drink plenty of water and don't give up good luck

  3. Thats a decent time for a girl in Junior High.

The mile may seem like a jog but in reality when you achieve more competitive times it becomes a very fast run. For example my warm up mile can vary anywhere from 5:30 to 6:30 and my best mile time is 4:38.  If you are going for a fast time you want to go out fast and stay relaxed the whole way. You have a lot of time to improve from where you are now until you reach your senior year of high school so just enjoy running and don't get too over competitive just yet. But ok, i think you can run an 8 minute mile no problem, you just have to run even paced laps at around 2 minutes each. For your 3rd lap try to stay focused and don't let up because this will always be your slowest lap if you don't do anything about it, and for your final lap just give it everything you got and i promise you will run a fast time. The mile run is more of a mental struggle that a physical one.

As far as training goes I would recommend daily runs of 15-25 minutes at a relaxed pace and later on if you get serious about running you can join the track team and kick some butt, who knows you might even go pro one day. Remember that nothing is impossible.

  4. Running is not advised. Jogging is better or a brisk paced walk even better.

  5. just try to run a little bit faster everytime you run until you get to where you want to be

  6. Being a girl doesn't mean anything! I'm a girl and I love passing guys. Anyways...to the question! You need to run more for your time to improve. Running 2-3 everyday will make running that one mile easier. And when I say "run" I don't mean as fast as you can go. But not jogging so slow that someone can walk by you. Just as fast as is comfortable when you first start out. After you run for a couple weeks you can start increasing the speed and how far you go. Take at least one rest day for your muscles to build up.

I think you should try to run the whole mile. Slow down to a jog if it becomes too much. But DONT walk, it makes it harder to get running/jogging again. Make sure you're hydrated before you run. If you have any more questions about running please email me!

  7. try this.....

-do intervals----- .take ur goal time divide in fourth. take this time and run 400 meters in this time. repeat it 4-8 times. with about 2:00 rest in between. and in the future slowly decrease ur rest time.

-hill work outs--- run hills as fast as u can. u kinda have to set ur goal time for this depending on the length and steepness of hill. repeat 6-10 times. remember to time ur rest time and kepp it to about 1:00

distance work out-----run from 3-6 miles and try to improve ur time and distance every week.

do intervals and hill workout once a week and distance work out 3-4 times a week. and remember to do warm up run b4 and after intervals and hill workout . and also strech b4 and after all workouts. if u feel sore ice ur muscles. do few pushups, situps or crunches everyday to help build ur muscle endurance.this is was the basic workout in my track team. im 14 and it helped me drop my mile time from 7:45 to 5:17 in 2 months and still improving.

also every 2 weeks during intervals day u can run a timed mile to see where u are at. remember warming up and streching b4 the race really helps u drop ur time.
