Is it better to stare at a monitor with more background light or less?

Right now I can control how much light is in the room so I usually tend to make it darker, but I was wondering if it was better for your eyes if you read/looked at it in a brighter room than a darker one.

You want to be in a room with more light. Being in a dark room looking at a monitor is bad for your eyes. I don’t remember why but I know it is.

The darker the room is, the brighter the screen seems. It's best to have the light on while staring at a monitor:)
