Is it better to stay in Downtown Cancun or the Hotel Zone?

I am traveling with my family to Cancun for the first time and we want to be near both shopping and the beaches. Any suggestions on centralized hotels?

Hotel zone for sure.  for 65c you can get a bus downtown no more than 15 min from the extreme end of the hotel zone.  The hotel zone and hotels there are located close th Km markers ranging from 1 km downtown to 20km at the end of the hotel zone.

Downtown area is a little seedy and run down. Definitely stay in the Hotel Zone. Transportation is cheap.....just pick one that looks good to you.

Definitely stay in the hotel zone.  They cater to all your needs and you'll be safer there.
