  1. Online is just as good if its legal in your state. Then get out on the boat and practice what you have learned at the course.

  2. its better when you can see who you are  talking to ..and  being able to judge if they know what they are talking about..you can teach out of a book but it is not the same as experience.. it is a lot better when you have  been there.. Like  in a sinking boat!!

  3. From the instructors perspective, if you do not do well in class or lecture halls you will probably not be to excited to sit through one of my 8 hour courses.  However, if you truly want to learn about boating safety (not that you will learn too much in just 8 hours) a USCG Auxiliary or Power Squadron course would be ideal.  I recommend my students study the material beforehand for at least a week, take the study tests/questions, read the state pamphlets, etc.  I try to organize my course so that all ages are comfortable with the material and questions, we have several minutes after each section to answer questions and practice knots during the lunch hour.  If you are really juiced about going boating this summer, do both the on line and hands on course.  You will never EVER learn it all, boating is more of an art than a sport, every time out will bring new challenges.  Be safe and boat smart.

  4. Learn as much as you can about boating wherever possible.

Hands on is absolutely necessary, just make sure you have a competent teacher.

Tons of good info online, as well.

  5. it is better to actually get involved physically , than depend on the inter net. besides it's more fun.
