I am wondering if the prices on expedia are higher than what the locals would pay.

  1. Contact some hotels by phone... better making reservations over the phone than over the internet, unless you use a travel agent... but talking to them you might ask for some discount and they may give it to you... be nice!

  2. It depends on whether or not you speak Portuguese. If you speak it then, depending on the time and season, you should be able to score some pretty cheap rates. Or if you know someone who is willing to bargain for you.

However, if you do not speak Portuguese, then I would suggest booking it over the internet.

It also depends on what kind of hotel you are looking at booking. If it is an upscale international hotel, they are less willing to bargain than the small mom and pop shops which offer more of an authentic experience.

  3. Web or travel agent.
