Is it cheaper to roll your own cigarettes or to smoke pipe tobacco?

Before I get any wise remarks like "just quit, that will be cheaper" I just want to say this isn't for me, and I'm an avid non-smoker. I'm very close with a smoker who refuses to quit, and I know what they spend on cigarettes and would like to help them to save money, I just don't know enough about tobacco products. Thanks .

Pipe tobacco is not taxed like cigarettes are, so it is cheaper to smoke a pipe.  A pipe smells better to. The only issue is, you need to spend a little money on some good briar pipes.  But it is an investment because if taken care of, a good pipe will last a lifetime.  So I would tell your friend to ditch the cigs, and pick up some pipes and good pipe tobacco from your local tobacconist.
