I saw it in a movie called "The Grave of the Fireflies". Although the movie takes place in the 1950's I couldn't help but wonder because I've never heard of it before.

  1. when i was in japan,my host mom and dad did not call my host student or her brother and sister with san...only when they were talking about them to me or to each other

  2. Going by what I've learned, that seems unusual. I believe that the common way to refer to children is with -kun (for a boy) or -chan (for a girl). Parents will call their children "son", "daughter", or simply by their given names. -San is usually used as a term of respect. And I don't think that it is ever used when referring to one's own family members. It's very similar to our "Mr." or "Ms." Unlike -Kun and -chan which are diminutives.
