  1. I am not Canadian, but I imagine once you are a citizen you would be able to apply to the service. That is the way it works in almost all countries. Notice I said citizen, and not a Visa or Canadian "Green Card" equivalent. Is it common, I doubt it. Not too many people are rushing to join any armed forces in the Western World unless they are looking to gain specific skills, establish themselves in a new country, or come from a strong military background, e.g. relatives in the service, etc.

  2. There is no compulsory military service in Canada. Some years ago, the then individual forces, ie the Navy,Army and Air Force were amalgamated into one force. By world standards it is fairly small, but highly professional and is comprised entirely of volunteers.

Because it is small, and though some of its members are serving in the world's miliary 'hotspots', it is not very common for ANY Canadians to join! However, I am sure you will be very welcome to apply, and the fact that you are a new immigrant, or a new citizen will make no difference.I am sure there are others.Remember, that like Zambia, Canada is a Commonwealth country with close ties to the UK. It might be that you can join their forces as a Commonwealth citizen,  even before you become Canadian, just as a Zambian can in the UK. I am not up to date on that particular point, but you can ask about it. It was certainly the case some years ago, because I am British, but served with the then Royal Canadian Airforce. I spent a bit of time in Lusaka and Ndola too.

    Best Wishes and Good Luck.
