Is it common for people to switch jobs b/c of favoritism and heated competition among peers?

I am in a local government position where me and my co-worker have the same position title, but I fear being labeled a "slacker" because he often puts out 110% for the work that he does. I hate competition, but I do the best that I can. Yet, I often get outfoxed by him, because he is more outgoing than myself.

Do I need to find a new job, if it frustrates me that much?

  1. it sucks to work somewhere you hate, I would look for a new job, who wants to go to a job you hate going to everyday, you know.

  2. I always say that if you are not happy in your job, fix it.  If that means finding a new job, so be it.

However, if you can find any way  to improve, then why not try.  And perhaps if you stick it out, he'll get a promotion and be gone anyways.

If you can go home at the end of a workday and sit there knowing you have honestly done the best job you could, then be happy with that.  If not, then what could you have done different.  OK, so he is more outgoing than yourself...what can you do to increase your confidence and be more outgoing?

  3. Favoritism yes, competition no.

You might consider if putting out 110% might be easier then looking for a new job!

Bosses tend to favor people who work harder.  Think about it.

  4. It's a free country yet, so you can get another job or put in for a transfer to another department.  The other alternative is to outfox the fox!
