How common or normal, is it, to freak out, when you've spent a huge amount of money, to the point of actually having a panic attack?

  1. I think it's normal for anyone after spending a considerable amount of money to have feelings of worry, regret, fear, etc....

It is abnormal to send yourself into a panic once you've gone through with the purchase. Keep in mind as well that excessive (especially frivolous) spending can be a symptom of underlying mental illness. It's common in bipolar disorder. When you are having a manic episode, you are prone to behavior you wouldn't normally act on. You feel almost euphoric and don't consider any consequences that might come from your actions.

If you feel you are reacting on an extreme level, you may want to get in to see a therapist to determine whether more is going on than you might be aware of.

  2. If spending has got you into deep trouble with your finances I can see why you would have a panic attack.  I guess the question is why did you spend so much?  Do you think you have a condition such as Bipolar Disorder that is causing you to go on shopping sprees?  Good Luck!
